Some reflexions before buying a canary:

– the male canary sings when he wants and as much as he wants, its song can sometimes become an embarrassment. Are you ready to support it? On the other hand during the moult i.e. at the end of the year in Autumn, it does not sing any more. Sometimes it may be that it does not sing definitively any more, will then like it always for as much;
– Neat goods the canaries live between 10 and 15 years, are you ready for a as long engagement, are you sure as in little time you will not be constrained with you to separate some for various reasons;
– Have you got sufficient time to devote to them: they must be nourished and looked after all days, at the same time the morning and the evening, all this in order to remain in good health.
– Have you got somebody of confidence to which to entrust them in the event of prolonged absence, if you leave on holiday, if you work in another city the week…
– Have you got sufficient place to install the cages and/or the birdcages. The minimum acceptable size of a cage is 40 (width) X 60(length) X 60 (Height)
– Are you really sure that they are not your children who lead you to the acquisition of the birds and which there after the latter will be them also with your load. ” Good-bye pleasure only of looking at them and hello drudgeries of week-end when should be cleaned the cages!!! ”
– Are you ready to let steal the canaries in your apartment, to let them flutter in your house. Indeed, by remain in the smallcages, they can numb the feet.
– Are you ready to tolerate seeds and the splashes of water around the cages. Are you ready to clean the neighbourhoods of their habitat regularly, all this by preoccupation with a strict hygiene for the birds.
– Are you sure not to be allergic to the feathers, with the dust caused by their flight. .
– If you have dogs or cats, are you sure that the cohabitation is possible with canaries or other birds.

These questions can appear rather simple, however each year, much of people do not think enough and realize their errors quickly after it, reflect it!!! Make so that the birds smell themselves well on your home, that you find time necessary to occupy some, if you do not think not to arriving, give up the purchase, the birds will find I think someone else that you who will have much time and will be able to better occupy it himself .

Male or female : the ideal is to have males and females but it is still necessary to know to recognize them. If you want song, take males if not if you wish only company, then take females, their song is indeed more discrete. To determine the sex of a canary it is enough to take it in hand and to blow to him on the belly. During spring one easily recognizes a male of a female, the cesspool in the male carries a prominent thickening: the genitaltuber whereas in the female it is not prominent, it is flat enough.

Which race to choose : there are some much butcontrary to the spread idea, the canaries are not that of yellow colorand are not all good singers. With the origin the canary was even ofcolor brown green and it is only after genetic engineering that itbecame very yellow (Cf the Wild Canary )

We distinguish :

– And the canaries of posture : The canaries of posture

Admittedly all the canaries sing but the canaries of color and posture have an a cuter register. Even if us the particular are able to look after canaries of color, song and small the English races with the smooth plumage, it is to better leave the breeding of the curly, hunchbacked canaries or of big sizes to the specialists.

Especially not a bird alone : living at its origins in group, you are unable to replace its congeneric in spite of your efforts, a canary can die of loneliness and sorrow. To have two individuals is already well, but a group is the ideal: 2 females do not pose problems but 2 males are difficult to manage because they will want to have their own territory.

Avoid the zones with risks : aquariums, kitchens, moreover avoid making them cohabit with parakeets which could wound your canaries. You can however put them with birds of small size in a birdcage.

Where to get some canaries : my consulting is to get them in breeders who often form part of an association or a club, they will be able to better advise you that the salesmen of the animaleries. However at a breeder home your choice will be restricted because they are often specialized in a race or a color, whereas in animalery your choice is larger. During the exposures you can thus request addresses from the breeders and consultings on the breeding. These exposures and these contests proceed at the end of the year and proceed on all France and even abroad.

Moment favorable for the purchase : semi-October at the end of December because the youthful moult of the young canaries is finished. At this same time you will be able to put them in birdcage and so they will acclimatize better with their new environment.

Signs of a bird in good health : it must first of all have an eye quite round and sharp, it should not have a plumage dishevelled except for the curly ones, it must be clean, smooth and brilliance. There should not remain motionless, posed swell about it on its perch. It must be sharp and to jump in its cage, it should not have the stuck eyelids. At the time purchase to check it that th eroom, the cage and its accessories are clean. Choose in priority the birds which were in a cage or there was enough place and not too congeneric ones, which into general is not beneficial with health. Also check the cleanliness of the ogets with foods and feedingtroughs, their dirtiness support the infections.
