Introduction
During its short life a canary. In spite of the many care which you can lavish to him can be prone to certain diseases. The first goal of this page is to enable you to detect as soon as possible. According to the symptoms: the disease from which suffers your bird. In this page you will thus find how to see a sick bird. And the various processing possible to lavish to him in order to accelerate its cure. In certain cases to even avoid to him die. Naturally the canaries are birds of robust nature but as one says is better to prevent than to cure. It is thus for this reason that the best attitude to be taken consists in looking after them (see page of the care of the site). Supervise with rigour the hygiene of their habitat, to often let them fly and to give them a rich and varied food with amongst other things from the greenery (fruit and vegetables).

Precautions to take
You will also note that the lack of vitamin A supports the infections. It will be thus essential of their bringing some in their daily feeding. You will avoid moreover draughts, indeed the canary is not sensitive to the cold as one can hear it. But the inopportune draughts are most of the time fatal for him. The brutal changes of temperature are also very dangerous for the canary. For this reason you will gradually bring the temperature of their new habitat of the hot to the cold for example (the opposite is also valid).

Healthy food
As regards food, it must be always fresh and not soiled by the fientes. This is for this reason the seeds must be changed at least every three days. The mangers disinfected once per week and the fountains filled daily and also disinfected once per week.

Quarantine
At the time of the purchase of a new bird. Some care of use are to be taken. Indeed you don’t know exactly under which conditions was breed the bird, its exact origin… How many stockbreeders have bought Spanish canaries carrying the variola of the canary and saw all or most of their breeding to perish under their eyes. When it arrived : it was often too late to treat and vaccinate the birds. My advice is to place the individual in a part at share of the part of breeding about forty days by it constantly observing in order to detect if the bird is healthy. At the end of forty days if it is the case you will be able to put it in the part of breeding where are your other canaries.

Analyzes
Some stockbreeders will say to you that they make analyze the excrements of their birds near a veterinary every three to six months. Personally I will say to you that they are not wrong to make it in the sense that they will be able to see whether the interior of their birds is healthy. But in my opinion with force of experience. I will say to you only with the color of excrements, you then see whether your birds are well. My advice is to observe our birds. And to act if these last seem to you suspect.

Here under this table describes you the symptoms observed most of the time in the stockbreeders holme, the causes of such diseases and the remedies to be lavished in the event of infection :
Description of Diseases

Possible causes :
Care to lavish :
Lice and accarians
Your bird is cleaning itself continuously and inspect its feathers, it is very agitated at the time of the nights, starts to sleep abnormally during the day.
This type of symptom resembles an intrusion of the red lice, of North, mallophages or accarians in the cage of your bird.
A cleaning of the cage and its around this last appears obligatory at a first time,. Also renew the litter, the materials for the nest in breeding period, the perches… As regards the birds, two solutions. First to sprinkle them with a produce against-lice and accarians such as Seribombe. Or then to powder one by one with a powder such as Pyrevol of BRUNET laboratories.
Abnormal moult
The moult lasts than one month and drag. Zones of naked skin appear, feathers are dull, loss of appetite, inflated belly, diarrhoea, even remain wound into a ball on him…
This symptom comes from a net lack of vitamin and aminated acids in the bird. That is completely due to a feeding badly adapted and little varied and thus of this fact with the lack of movement of the bird.
You must provide to the bird a good mash with egg mixed with vitamins and inorganics salt . Give also him many greenery and carotts rich in vitamins, but not too often because of risk of diarrhoea. If you can do it, let fly it as often as possible out of its cage.
Salmonellose or ...
Your bird is curled up into a ball on him, victim of generalized uneasiness, it doesn’t eat. Diarrhoeas exceed 24 hours.
This disorder can be the consequence of internals parasites such as worms or coccidies, of a hepatic or renal disease, an intestinal ignition, salmonellose, ornithose or Newcastle disease, variola, poisoning.
My opinion is to consult a veterinary surgeon considering the possible number of cases. But before you can nevertheless change its food into bringing a richer and balanced alimentation. You can also give it a vitaminized complex and antibiotics in order to relieve it. In the case it is variola, you will have to cure to vaccinate your bird.
Liquid excrements
The excrements of the bird are very liquid, you observe diarrhoeas and the cesspool of your birds is maculated of dejections.
Several factors can play here : the stress can the cause, like the excitation, the falls of temperatures, excesses of greenery and fruits, the rotted food contribution…
You will check initially which type of food you have previously give to it. The tea with camomile or bark of oak as of peeled ats seeds will bennefit to it. You will also can if you have some some to light it with an infra-red lamp until cure.
Pneumonia
Your bird is apathetic, curled up into a ball on him, it doesn’t eat, vomits, has the eyelids stuck , nasal secretions nasales and intense thirst.
Sevaral possible reasons : draughts, bad site of the cage…
Consult a veterinary surgeon as soon as possible. . He will give you the vitamins, necessary and adequate antibiotics to the cure of your friend with feather.
Inappetite
Your bird doesn’t nourish itself at all.
The food present are either rotted, or inadapted. An infection or internal disease can also be the cause for it.
You will give to your bird other food very appreciated such as chickweed, dandelion, ears of millet and you will heat his life space sufficiently.
Cooling
Your bird breaths with difficulty, most of the time the nozzle open.
A cooling is certainly at the origin of your misfortune,, its nostrils must be blocked.
Take care that your canary is sufficiently hot (infra-red lamp) and that the air of the part is sufficiently wet. Increase the contribution in vitamins and delicately eliminate the crusts on its nostrils with physiological salt solution or a nasal spray with the euphorbium. If your bird vomits mucus : consult a veterinary surgeon as fast as possible (viral, bacterial or fungic and dangerous infection such as ornithose, variola, diphteria, disease of Newcastle, aspergillosis…).
Serious illness
Your bird sleeps all the day, apathetic, curled up into a ball on him.
It acts unfortunately most of the time of a serious illness, insufficiency, retention of egg or inflamation of the uropygian gland.
Initially try to light your bird using an infra-red lamp, if the symptoms persist consult as quickly as possible your veterinary surgeon. It can be the fact of serious infectious diseases, of an internal disease, parasites or deficiencies.
Coccidiose
Your bird has diarrhoeas bloodthirsty, a loss of weight is noted, it dribbles and die at the end of 4-5 days.
This disease is the consequence of the ingestion of contaminated food or liquids.
In prevention, you have to clean regularly cages and accessories of your birds. To treat the bird, you will initially isolate it, you will disinfect it and will bring it to your veterinary surgeon.
Collibacillose

Your bird seams to be tired, it drowses, loses weight, you observe small wight fragments in its motions.
This type of problem is met when there is a lack of hygiene in the habitat itself and in the neighbourhoods of the bird.
Quickly manage to your bird a suitable vermifuge and meticulously clean its habitat at least once per week.

Thus I think that with its small advices, your preoccupations with a hygiene of the cages and accessories will appear to you from now more vital.
